Over 8,000 Cash Registers at LC Waikiki Have Migrated to Linux
LC Waikiki has implemented a remarkable technology transformation in the retail sector with an open-source transformation project covering more than 8,000 devices. Within the scope of the project, LCW OS, a GNU/Linux-based and fully customized operating system, has been actively deployed in the field. More than 4,500 cash registers in Turkiye and over 3,500 around the world are being transitioned to the new-generation open-source infrastructure.

LCW OS
Developed to create a technology structure that is more suitable for operational needs and sustainable, LCW OS aimed to establish a more customizable, manageable, and controllable infrastructure. With the transformation, license costs decreased while paving the way for more efficient use of existing hardware resources.
From Turkey to the World
Starting as a pilot application in a store in Istanbul, it was rapidly expanded after being verified under real operating conditions. Today, the conversion of more than 4,000 out of 4,500 cash registers in Turkey has been completed. While the process continues as planned, preparations for stores abroad are also underway.
Open Source Based Infrastructure
To ensure infrastructure sustainability, device inventory and lifecycle management were provided using Foreman Lifecycle Manager, while remote configuration management was performed with Ansible. Thanks to Katello integration, package management, version tracking, and updates were centralized.

Gibux - Revenue Administration Operating System
GIBUX was developed in 2013 for the Turkish Revenue Administration. In addition to being Turkiye's largest Linux desktop migration project carried out in an institution, GIBUX ranks in the top 3 in Europe and among the top 10 largest projects in the world.
GIBUX was deployed on a total of 37,301 desktop computers across 1,184 locations throughout Turkiye. Today, this number has reached approximately 40,000 due to the growing number of employees. As part of the project, 515 Active Directory servers were also replaced with a Samba-based infrastructure. The success achieved through this project paved the way for the development of SambaBox.
The project entered its second phase in 2022. Following the upgrade of the institution’s field hardware to 64-bit architecture, Profelis began redeveloping GIBUX with a completely new interface and significantly enhanced capabilities as part of the GIBUX64 project. As of September 2022, the 64-bit version of GIBUX was actively running on 2,500 desktop computers across 71 locations.
Thanks to the project, Turkiye saves millions of dollars every year.

Next Generation Central Management
Centralized monitoring systems—among the first of their kind—were developed for GIBUX. This made it possible to monitor field operations from a single center, while delegated permissions allowed field personnel to monitor their own regions, thereby improving the system’s overall effectiveness.

Thanks to the project, Turkiye saves millions of dollars every year. When both operating costs and total cost of ownership are taken into account, the project stands as a source of pride and an exemplary model for public institutions and the national budget.

Turkcell
Tekirdağ City Hospital
At Tekirdag City Hospital, user computers run the Linux-based HBYS OS, developed specifically for Turkcell, alongside PendantOS for blood collection tablets and KioskOS for kiosks, supported by the SambaBox directory infrastructure.


Desktop, Pendant (Tablet) and Kiosk
Although HBYS OS was developed for desktop computers, we also created Linux-based operating systems for the tablets (pendants) used in blood collection units and the kiosk devices used for queue management to reduce costs.
802.1X with Dynamic VLAN support
802.1X authentication dynamically changes the user’s VLAN based on their Organizational Unit (OU) in SambaBox, after the user authenticates through HBYS OS. The user then receives a new IP address accordingly. All these processes are handled by the Profelis Network Stack.
Strong Structure Working 24x7
HBYS OS and all other components were developed to ensure 24x7 system operation. An intelligent infrastructure was designed with centralized updates and fault detection capabilities.
Fast and Stable
Hardware-specific optimizations were implemented for the devices selected by Turkcell for the project, resulting in a stable system that operates significantly faster than alternative operating systems.

Turkiye’s Largest Concurrent VPN Network
It was developed in 2010 for the Union of Turkish Notaries to meet a technical requirement within the second-hand vehicle sales infrastructure project. An active-passive OpenVPN server architecture was designed to connect 7,208 endpoints to a single center without using an SSL concentrator.
The project required custom modifications to the OpenVPN code. Within a few weeks, OpenVPN’s lead engineer, James Yonan, and our company’s Managing Partner, Çağlar Ülküderner, developed the necessary code, marking a new era for both the project and OpenVPN. The OpenVPN stress-testing tool used worldwide today is still the tool originally developed for this project. The VPN service has continued to operate reliably for many years.

Diyanet Pardus and Diyanet 2023
The project was launched in 2021 for the Presidency of Religious Affairs to support the development and widespread adoption of the Pardus operating system in Turkiye. It was carried out under the supervision of the TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM Pardus team. As part of the project, approximately 10,000 client devices were migrated to Diyanet Pardus.
In the first phase of the project, the GNOME desktop environment was used, while the second phase transitioned to Cinnamon. Since Pardus had not previously offered a Cinnamon edition, the resulting version was received much more positively by both the institution and its users.
Following the success of the project, Profelis successfully completed the institution’s migration to other open-source tools. As of 2023, this operating system was replaced by the Ubuntu-based Diyanet2023, also developed in collaboration with Profelis.

Innovative Engineering
The Diyanet Pardus project is particularly significant because it enabled the development of a stable Cinnamon edition for use with the Pardus distribution. By providing an experience familiar to users, Cinnamon has also helped other institutions view migration projects more positively.
The Largest Pardus Migration in the Public Sector
It is the largest desktop migration project among public institutions. The project is also an important example due to its ability to operate across dozens of different hardware configurations. Developments were made to ensure seamless operation on laptops, desktop computers, and all-in-one computers, enabling both Diyanet Pardus and the broader Pardus project to make significant progress.
New Hardware Support
As part of the Diyanet Pardus project, drivers were added or developed for more than 50 peripheral devices that were not directly supported by Pardus. This added value will help save time and reduce costs in future projects.
Low Cost
One of the project’s most significant benefits is the financial savings achieved by the institution. By eliminating external dependency and ensuring the efficient use of national resources, the project serves as an exemplary model for both Pardus and Turkiye.

Turkey's first open-source hospital
During its establishment in 2008, Private Aksaray Hospital made an unprecedented decision in Turkiye to use open-source products throughout its entire IT infrastructure. Following this decision, Profelis carried out all engineering and development work and designed thin clients to provide users with services through Linux terminal servers. Considering the number of users relative to the available hardware resources, the developments made specifically for the terminal servers provided significant contributions to the Linux kernel project.
The open-source Care2x software was adapted to comply with Turkiye’s regulations for hospital automation. For many years, the hospital achieved one of the smoothest integrations with the Ministry of Health’s systems and received some of the highest reimbursement amounts with minimal issues. This success also inspired subsequent projects for the Ministry of Health and other institutions. On behalf of Turkiye, we extend our sincere gratitude to the hospital’s administrators for their vision and trust.

In a hospital environment, where system availability is critical and human lives are at stake, extensive engineering work was carried out to ensure fast and uninterrupted access. The resulting developments also contributed to the Linux operating system.
24x7 High Availability
Highly available servers accessible to all users have provided uninterrupted service 24X7 for more than 10 years, with services remaining continuously available even during major system updates.
Low Resource High Performance
Considering both network resources and the hospital’s overall hardware infrastructure, the entire hospital system operated for years with remarkably limited resources and without performance issues. Resources were efficiently utilized through detailed allocation and segmentation within the Xen virtualization environment.
Low Cost
The project was implemented and managed at one-twentieth of the cost of infrastructures based on other operating systems. The use of thin clients enabled rapid responses to user issues and allowed hardware failures to be resolved at a low cost.
